ESA approves renewal of media support scheme in Liechtenstein

Today, the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) has approved a revised version of the Liechtenstein Media Support Act.

The scheme, originally established in 2006, seeks to uphold opinion pluralism, media diversity, enhance journalistic-editorial quality, and facilitate the dissemination of opinion-shaping media in Liechtenstein.

The latest amendments introduce measures to improve journalistic quality, transparency, and sustainability. Notable changes include increasing the minimum number of media workers from one to two, requiring editorial statutes and adherence to a journalists’ code of ethics as eligibility criteria for support, and raising direct financial support for media. Additionally, a new start-up payment of up to CHF 250 000 (EUR 265 390) is introduced for newly established media companies that do not yet qualify for direct or indirect media support, provided they present a viable five-year business plan.

The revised Media Support Act will remain in force until 31 December 2029 and has an estimated annual budget of CHF 1.84 million (EUR 1.9 million).
