EU Innovation Fund: Commission allocates EUR 4.6 billion to support net-zero tech, EV batteries, and renewable hydrogen

Today, the European Commission (Commission) has launched two calls for proposals and a hydrogen auction totaling EUR 4.6 billion under the EU Innovation Fund to advance net-zero technologies and strengthen European industrial competitiveness. In detail:

  • Net-Zero Technologies Call (EUR 2.4 billion): Supports decarbonization projects, focusing on renewable energy components, energy storage, heat pumps, and hydrogen production. Projects will be assessed on innovation, emissions reduction, and cost efficiency. Member States can complement this with national funding.
  • Battery Manufacturing Call (EUR 1 billion): Promotes innovative electric vehicle battery cell production and advanced manufacturing techniques. This is part of a broader strategy to boost Europe’s battery sector.
  • Renewable Hydrogen Auction (EUR 1.2 billion): Funds renewable hydrogen projects within the EEA. Additional EUR 700 million from Spain, Lithuania, and Austria support projects through an “Auctions-as-a-Service” mechanism.

These calls and the auction are funded by EU ETS revenues. Project promoters for the net-zero technologies and battery calls have until 24 April 2025, 17:00 (CET), to apply to both Innovation Fund calls and the Auction via the EU Funding and Tenders Portal.
